Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Technical Manager to lead the technical planning and delivery of complex live events. This position bridges client expectations, commercial objectives, and technical execution, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest professional standards.
The successful candidate will oversee the technical production of large-scale corporate and exhibition events, often managing multiple event spaces simultaneously. Working alongside Technical Managers, Account Managers, Operations teams and freelance crews, you will take overall responsibility for technical delivery from initial concept through to final de-rig.
Alongside project responsibilities, you will play an important role in developing the wider technical team through mentoring, coaching, and identifying opportunities for professional growth. You will help promote a culture of continuous improvement, technical excellence, and safe working practices throughout the department.
This role would suit someone currently working in technical production, AV project management, or senior event delivery who is looking to take ownership of larger and more technically demanding projects.
Event Delivery & Technical Leadership
• Direct the technical planning and implementation of live events, including audiovisual systems, scenic elements, LED solutions and rigging requirements.
• Maintain overall responsibility for technical operations across multi-space or multi-stream events.
• Support Technical Managers with specialist advice on challenging production requirements.
• Ensure installations and removals are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with project specifications.
• Act as the senior technical point of contact throughout event delivery.
Planning & Documentation
• Produce and review technical drawings, equipment layouts, signal-flow documentation and cable schedules.
• Develop detailed event plans that support efficient onsite execution.
• Create and maintain health and safety documentation relevant to each project.
• Ensure technical information is communicated clearly to internal teams, suppliers and clients.
Commercial & Client Engagement
• Participate in client meetings and project development discussions.
• Contribute technical expertise during proposal preparation and new business pitches.
• Collaborate with Account Managers to develop practical, cost-effective technical solutions that meet client objectives.
Resource & Team Management
• Work with Operations teams to determine crew, transport and equipment requirements.
• Coordinate technical personnel, local labour and logistics resources as required.
• Assist with training initiatives and skills development programmes within the technical department.
• Encourage best practice, professional standards and continuous learning across the team.
Industry Knowledge & Compliance
• Remain informed about emerging event technologies, production techniques and industry developments.
• Promote safe working procedures and compliance with relevant legislation and company standards.
• Champion high standards of technical delivery and operational excellence.
About You
You will bring significant experience in technical event production together with the leadership skills needed to manage complex projects and support developing teams.
Essential Experience & Skills
• Strong background in live event production with progression into technical management, project management or a similar leadership role.
• Proven experience delivering events from initial planning through to onsite execution and post-event completion.
• Excellent understanding of event infrastructure, including power distribution, cabling and onsite safety requirements.
• Ability to interpret and produce technical drawings using Vectorworks or comparable CAD software.
• Confident calculating equipment requirements, loadings, sightlines, projection distances, lighting positions, audio coverage and power consumption.
• Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
• Competent user of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Excellent organisational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Professional approach with the ability to remain composed and solution-focused in demanding environments.
Qualifications
• A-Level standard education or equivalent.
• Relevant higher education qualification desirable but not essential.
Working Environment
Our projects are primarily delivered during weekdays; however, flexibility is required as event schedules may involve evening and weekend work. This role is not suited to a traditional 9-to-5 working pattern and requires adaptability to meet client and project demands.
Due to the collaborative and operational nature of the position, most working time will be spent either onsite or within one of our office locations. Occasional home working may be available where project commitments allow.
