Job Description

This is an excellent opportunity to join directly a heritage organisation based in the heart of London. Our client is looking for an experienced Lighting Manager to lead the delivery of all lighting components for our client’s exhibitions and displays, including public spaces. The Exhibitions Lighting Manager will be responsible for the ongoing presentation of installed lighting across our client’s campus

Working with internal colleagues and external specialists you will provide technical and design expertise, contributing to the planning and preparation of all exhibitions and displays.

This is a brand new role and a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic, proactive individual to shape the team’s approach to managing our new and expanded facilities.

About you
Ideally you will have at least 3 years’ professional experience and will have held supervisory responsibilities in your previous role(s). You will have a sound understanding and demonstrable experience of lighting systems, including dimming and lighting control systems, coupled with a working knowledge of electricity, electronics and control equipment.

Diplomatic yet assertive, you must be a strong team player, a clear communicator and adept at project delivery, since this role requires close collaboration with colleagues from across the organisation. You should be prepared to work flexible hours, as some evening and weekend work will be required, and you must have a head for heights with a willingness to work from Mobile Elevated Working Platforms.

Although not essential, previous experience of working in a range of galleries or venues, particularly historic and listed buildings, as well as an interest in the visual arts, would be preferable.

JOB DESCRIPTION


MAIN DUTIES

• Act as main point of contact regarding lighting within all exhibition or display projects.
• Attend key meetings throughout the planning cycle, giving design input and technical guidance.
• Act as the lighting designer for selected exhibitions and displays.
• Work with external lighting designers and contractors, facilitating their work and coordinate any co-working with the inhouse team.
• Lead the team in, and undertake technical installation duties for all exhibitions.
• Ensure all displays and exhibitions are inspected regularly and the design is maintained throughout the duration of display. Plan and train the team on maintenance and repair tasks specific to each exhibition.

Team Management
• Line-manage, coach and motivate AV & Lighting Technicians. Recommend training and lead on peer-to-peer learning opportunities so all technicians can capably deliver any request or problem-solve.
• Use shared skills and availability within the team to ensure resilience and coverage across the full calendar year.
• Induct, book and manage lighting freelancers, contractors and consultants.

Equipment Preparation and Maintenance
• Lead on the procurement, installation and maintenance of lighting systems for display spaces across campus, staying abreast of technical advances.
• Maintain the cleanliness and order of storage areas.
• Maintain the departmental asset register, ensuring adequate equipment and critical spares are in stock always.
• Responsible for updating all manuals, risk assessments, safety practices, and technical information held.
• Work with the Operations Estates Service Manager to plan the annual budget.

Other Duties
• Support the AV events work stream including events delivery on occasional circumstances.
• Ensure that Health & Safety policies, procedures and regulations are known, understood and complied with by you, the team and external colleagues and stakeholders.
• Undertake any other duty reasonably assigned by the Estates Operations Service Manager or other senior member of staff.


PERSON SPECIFICATION

ESSENTIAL AND DESIRABLE QUALITIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Experience
• A minimum of three years’ professional experience and demonstrable experience of supervisory responsibilities
• Suitable industry specific, further or higher education qualifications
• Experience working in a wide range of galleries/buildings, especially historic and listed
• Experience in project contribution and delivery

Knowledge
• Excellent knowledge and experience of various lighting systems
• Highly computer literate
• A working knowledge of electricity, electronics and control equipment
• IPAF certificate
• Knowledge of sound and audio-visual equipment with awareness of industry trends or advances (desirable)
• Experience of CAD (desirable)
• Knowledge of CDM regulations (desirable)

• Effective communication skills with ability to negotiate and influence at all levels – ability to build strong relationships within the organisation and with key external stakeholders is vital
