Job Description
New freelance opportunity for a Head of Production. This contract will run until the end of April however their is a likelihood it will be extended. Please apply if you are interested.
You will lead and take overall responsibility for the efficient and effective operation of the Production/AV Team department, ensuring that events and performances produced or presented are of the highest possible standard and produced within allocated budgets and timescales.Directly reporting to the COO, you will need to work well as part of a team and be able to motivate yourself to exceed expectations. You will ensure we deliver excellent service at all times to Programmers, bands, theatre groups, performers, and outside hires, in order to help fulfil our client’s vision and mission.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Events & performances
• To liaise with internal clients (such as programmers or event managers) and external clients (such as theatre groups, bands, partner organisations and venue hirers) to ensure that effective planning is in place for the smooth running of their events or performances
• To be responsible for the smooth running of all events on the day itself – including private hires – from a technical and production support perspective
• To act as a technician for events as and when necessary
• Work alongside relevant colleagues to ensure all work is carried out in accordance with hire agreements, licensing restrictions and regulations and health, safety and fire regulations
Team management
• Be responsible for the management and administration of the production/technical department, ensuring the provision of all production/AV services required
• Line manage the Technical and Production team. Manage the rota for all events, ensuring we have appropriate cover and that we maximize our resources; do not over-staff (or overpay) for events; only use appropriately experienced/trained staff; only use extra/casual staff when absolutely necessary etc
• Support and develop and train all individual technical production staff, both at the induction stage and on an ongoing basis, to ensure that they are able to carry out their areas of responsibility efficiently and effectively, and that high standards are maintained
• Procure the services of technical contractors/casual or freelance staff as required, scheduling shifts and working within budgets and frameworks agreed
• Motivating all Production/AV staff to provide the highest standards of professionalism at all times
• Lead and participate in team briefings and meetings to ensure that there is a full understanding of all productions and the responsibilities of different team members
Equipment, stock & workspaces
• Be responsible for the security, maintenance, inventory and safety of the production workspaces and equipment
• Maintain records required for the effective administration and monitoring of all production equipment and facilities as determined under the terms and needs of (for example) licensing agreements, fire, health and safely legal obligations and operational maintenance schedules
• To hire in equipment for events or performances as appropriate
• Ensure the highest possible technical and artistic standards are achieved within the allocated resources
• General management of cinema, cleanliness, lights, processes
OTHER RESPONSIBILITES AND DUTIES:
• Protect and enhance the reputation of our client, presenting the organisation in an appropriate and professional manner to stakeholders.
• Act as an advocate for the impact of our client’s work where appropriate.
• Build appropriate relationships with relevant organisations to raise our client’s positive profile.
• Attend all relevant staff meetings, supervisions, etc.
• Act as an ambassador/point of contact at our client’s office – answering the telephone, welcoming guests as needed.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience
• At least 4 years’ experience of managing production in an arts venue, live performance venue, or theatre comparable to our clients
• Hands-on experience of technical lighting and sound in an arts centre/cultural environment
• Liaising successfully with touring companies, bands and/or other external producers
• A demonstrably thorough knowledge of theatre and music production practice
• Successfully working under pressure whilst maintaining calm, with multiple demands and in a busy environment
• A confident and friendly manner with the public and a professional/smart appearance
• Excellent written and verbal English communication and numeracy skills, including telephone manner
• Successfully managed teams and individuals
• Motivated, highly organised, with initiative and good time management skills
• Able to interact confidently and build relationships with a wide range of types, at all levels
• Extremely thorough – with attention to detail and strong organisational skills
• Professional manner – efficient and effective
• Enthusiastic and eager to learn
• Outgoing, friendly and willing to pitch in and help others within the team
• Flexibility with a pro-active and creative approach to problem solving
• Solid, appropriate level of IT skills and experience, including using Word, Excel, internet, Outlook and databases
