Great opportunity for an IT System Manager to join a long term contract, with the possibility of extension.
Duties and Responsibilities- To recommend and purchase equipment (including servers and desktop workstations) and software as required by the research groups
- To oversee and assist in the installation of new equipment
- To install, configure and update operating systems and software
- To advise and help researchers in using computing facilities within the department and elsewhere
- To create and maintain documentation, and provide training to researchers in the use of computing facilities
- To monitor IT systems, respond to problem reports and requests from users, and investigate and solve hardware and software problems
- To advise and help researchers in the development, building, installation and running of software
- To register and de-register users
- To maintain an overview of cluster usage, including CPU and disk space, and plan upgrades when necessary
- To respond promptly to software and hardware failures
- To research new systems and services that may be of use to users
Person Specification
Essential
- Demonstrable ability to manage multi-user networked Linux or Unix systems
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with researchers of varying levels of IT expertise
- Ability to prioritise and complete tasks assigned by multiple colleagues
- Degree in a relevant subject
- Experience with cluster environments (e.g. Rocks Linux), batch computing systems (e.g. PBS, Grid Engine, Condor) and/or grid computing systems (e.g. EMI, gLite)

Desirable
- Experience of working in a collaborative research environment
- Experience with managing data storage and back up (e.g. NFS, Lustre)

- Knowledge of programming languages such as C, C++, Fortran and Java
